Ex-Defense Minister Alexandr Vondra testified yesterday in the Jana Nagyová trial that he knew nothing about Military Intelligence conducting surveillance on the wife of PM Petr Nečas in late 2012. This shouldn't surprise anyone. Nor did he know the details of the Kč 766m contract to Promopro for audio-visual and interpreting services for the EU presidency in 2009. Twelve people were charged, but not Vondra. And of course Vondra knew nothing about underpriced sales of used military parts by his head of army logistics, Gen. Vladimír Halenka, who has now been charged. How can a one-time Nato defense minister know so little about things falling under his command? Pres. Miloš Zeman said last week that Czechs are sometimes too benevolent toward crazy people, but isn't the greatest degree of benevolence afforded to those in positions of responsibility and power? They're the ones usually getting away with "murder." [Czech Republic European Union AV]
