Winter is approaching, and Ukraine finds itself much shorter on sources of electricity this year than last year. The Economist quoted CEO Maxim Timchenko of DTEK, which runs most of Ukraine's non-nuclear plants, as saying that 90% of the generating capacity of these plants has been destroyed this year. The New York Times reported that nearly all of Ukraine's thermal power plants and a third of its hydroelectric plants have been destroyed. Small businesses have adapted by using generators. The roar of them became a soundtrack of the Ukrainian capital during a heatwave in mid-July, the NYT said. Into this comes the threat by Slovak PM Robert Fico to halt supplies of diesel fuel to Ukraine if Kyiv doesn't resume transit of oil from Lukoil. Fico said that Slovnaft is covering 10% of Ukraine's diesel needs. Petr Zajíc of Amundi assured Czech TV that this dispute won't have an effect on the CR. Inevitably, though, any decision by Russia, Ukraine or EU countries to cut off supplies to Ukraine of products from Russian petroleum is going to affect everyone over time. Each successive winter is going to be a bigger and bigger test. [ Czech Republic Television ]
