Final Word from Wednesday, April 25, 2018
One could argue about the exact terminology, but ex-Acting Chair Milan Chovanec of ČSSD was basically right when he told Právo that it is "childish" of his party to make the demand that Andrej Babiš resign immediately as prime minister of a new ANO-led government if he is convicted on the trial level in the Stork's Nest case. The entire government would fall, Chovanec correctly pointed out. He was trying to thwart the formation of such a government, but this shouldn't stop ČSSD Chair Jan Hamáček from taking the admonition to heart. For such a condition to be at all politically astute, it would need to encompass an answer to the question of what comes next. To avoid a new political crisis, the three parties involved (ANO, ČSSD, KSČM) would need to put an agreement in place now on a successor to Babiš as PM. Most importantly, they would need to agree now to keep Babiš in office until Miloš Zeman gave a public vow that he would respect their choice and appoint the new PM. Otherwise, Chovanec would have every right to continue to question the political maturity of ČSSD's new leadership. [Czech Republic Communist Party Pres. president Petr Nečas]
