Final Word from Friday, December 21, 2007
It might not be very politically correct to say so in this atmosphere of partisan politics, but it's possible to be in favor of healthcare fees and at the same time to question whether they're constitutional. Just as it was possible to accept the idea of extraditing Czechs under a European arrest warrant and doubting the constitutionality of doing so. To the amateur eye, the Constitution seems clear enough. In the first case, there is the right to free healthcare, and in the second there is the right not to be forced to leave the homeland. From a lexical point of view, correcting the Constitution could be as easy as removing the word "free" in the first case and adding something about international treaties in the second. But from a political standpoint, mustering the votes to change the Constitution is a non-starter. So trampling the Constitution remains the more politically correct solution for the ruling elite.[Czech Republic European Union doctor medical extradition]
