It's probably premature to paraphrase R.E.M. and belt out, "It's the end of the radar as we know it, and we all feel fine." However, even some of those in the pro-radar faction started losing their religion when Washington and Moscow went above their heads and tried to plot the return of Russian soldiers to hallowed Czech ground. The diplomatic brouhaha is double punishment for the government of Mirek Topolánek. On the one hand, 14 EU countries allegedly voted against the CR's candidacy on the U.N. Security Council (according to MP Lubomír Zaorálek of ČSSD), because the CR makes a bad alliance partner. On the other hand, the very object of the CR's extra-alliance affair, the U.S., has been off necking with the Russkies. The CR finds itself in the position of both the jilted and the jiltee.
