Václav Klaus visited Arnold Schwarzenegger in Sacramento yesterday and praised the governor for his stance on immigration. Czech politicians have mostly avoided the specifics of immigration policy, so this was a significant statement. Schwarzenegger argues that the first order of business is to secure U.S. borders. He has supported legislation to end the issuance of driver's licenses to illegal aliens, and he favors the quick deportation of any illegal who commits a serious crime, but he's against mass deportation of others. He favors documenting existing illegals with a temporary worker program and supports earned citizenship, but he's against an amnesty. Klaus has called multiculturalism a tragic mistake but stops short of saying what should be done about it. It would be useful if, instead of merely praising his host's immigration stance, he commented on it line-by-line.[Czech Republic California immigrants]
